01 About
One person, and you are talking to him.
There is no account manager, no team page with stock photographs on it, and no "we" doing the work. The person who answers the phone is the person who writes the code, which is the whole of both the advantage and the risk.
I am Evan. I build websites and the automation that runs behind them, from Ipsden in Oxfordshire, for clients anywhere in the UK.
I came to this from visual effects rather than from a computer science degree. Three years of compositing, environments and lighting at the University of West London, which is a discipline about making something artificial survive being looked at closely. That turns out to be most of what design is.
The engineering came alongside it and then took over. What I kept from the first discipline is a specific habit: in visual effects nobody believes a shot is finished because it looks finished. You check it at full resolution, frame by frame, against a reference. Every audit described on this site is that habit applied to a different medium.
The work that follows from that is deliberately narrow. Websites that are built rather than assembled, and automation that is safe to leave switched on. I would rather be the obvious choice for two things than a plausible option for ten.
02 The case against me
Reasons to hire somebody else.
There is no cover. If I am ill, your project waits that week. An agency has someone else to put on it, and if your launch is tied to a date that cannot move, that difference is worth paying for.
The client list is short. I can show you finished work and every number in it, and I cannot yet show you ten years of it. If a long reference list is what makes you comfortable, I do not have one to give you.
You will not be editing pages yourself. That is the trade for a site with no database and nothing to be exploited. If publishing several articles a week is the point, you want a different kind of build.
03 The case for
Reasons it might be worth it anyway.
You deal with the person doing the work. Nothing is relayed through somebody who has to ask. Decisions happen in the conversation rather than three days later.
Everything is measured and the measurements come with it. Not a score from a tool you could have run yourself, but the output of the same harnesses that gated the build.
Design and engineering are the same person. Nothing gets designed that cannot be built, and nothing gets built that quietly abandons the design because it was awkward.
You are told what is not true. Every case study on this site ends with what is unproven about it. You will get the same treatment as a client, on the call, before you spend anything.

The visual row is a genuine second discipline rather than a list of things I have opened once. It is also the least relevant row on this page if what you need is a website, which is why it is last. There is a showreel if you want to see it.
Ask me something difficult.
The call is twenty minutes and costs nothing, and the fastest way to find out whether this is a fit is to try to catch me out on it.
